ABOUT HEAT PUMP HOT WATER SYSTEMS
Heat pump hot water systems work by using the same principle as a split system air conditioner: they extract heat from the surrounding air and use it to heat water. These systems run on electricity, but they use a fan to circulate air through a refrigerant gas, which helps to heat the water. As a result, heat pump hot water systems can produce the same amount of heat as a standard electric storage system while using up to 74% less electricity.
Due to their reliance on the outdoor ambient air temperature, these units are required to run during the day when the weather is at its optimal and to allow enough time to heat. This is great for those who want to use the systems inbuilt timer to offset some of their excess solar PV generation instead of selling it back to the grid and/or switch to the time of use tariff (TOU). As solar feed-in tariffs decrease and gas prices rise, homes are looking at ways to absorb the excess solar during the day to run appliances within the home and/or disconnecting all gas appliances in the home to save the supply charge.
A heat pump uses between 0.5-1kW to heat per hour, compared to a standard 250lt electric storage tank which uses 3.6kW – that’s more than 3x the electricity for the same outcome and equates to around $800 per year in running cost savings when you make the switch!
For heat pump installations we can claim two rebates, STC & REPS. STC is short for Small Scale Technology Certificates which is a federal government initiative and the second, REPS, is short for the Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme. This scheme is a South Australian initiative to try to get households to move towards more energy-efficient hot water. All rebates we can claim on your behalf as point-of-sale discount and will be included in your quote.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS
Heat pump hot water systems are an efficient technology which for many homes will save money and energy. This is not to say they are perfect for every South Australian home, but with the right set up they can provide significant savings.
We recommend that customers on a time-of use tariff, or who have a moderate sized PV system (or both!) consider a heat pump option for their hot water, but to beware of some of the cheaper options in the market. Checking the warranty, electricity usage and online reviews on the unit before purchasing can save you the hassle of getting the wrong product. Even customers who do not have time-of-use tariff or a solar system are still likely to see savings on their electricity bill but should always ensure their timer is set during daylight hours to maximise system efficiency.

Great experience dealing with hotwater.com.au, I had several questions about how the transition would work to disconnect our existing gas and install an Istore heat-pump to run off our PV system and all the staff were extremely helpful.Even though it took me awhile to finally commit they were able to redo my old quote quickly when I did decide to go ahead.Quote was extremely competitive and everything was clearly written / explained. The technicians arrived on time. They asked if I wanted them to remove their boots before walking on the carpet. They worked steadily and efficiently. Due to the age of the heater they advised me to purchase a Co Meter. I have followed this advice ! I am very happy with the service given !

Customer service second to none. Decided to buy a heat pump and landed in the best possible position for this costly purchase, starting with hotwater.com.au's informative website. Purchase and installation (thanks, Mark and Liam) were so easy and professional. All necessary documentation followed from Natika in the office, an absolute gem. I had a problem with freeze issues on a rinnai solar heater panel. It failed on a friday and this company was very supportive and able to replace defective units under warranty by the following tuesday. Awesome support and customer detail. The first thing I would like to say is to commend HOTWATER.COM.AU for installing the iStore heat pump hot water system very efficiently and professionally at my home on 9 May 2024. The two plumbers undertook the installation with minimum interference to our normal activities, and left the house with little evidence that they had been present for just over 2 hours, except for a spanking new hot water system located outside the house. The electrician came after the plumbers had left but spent a bit more time than the installers inside and outside the house and above the ceiling. He did a great job wiring up the hot water system and reorganising the primary and secondary switch boards. The plumbers and electrician were extremely respectful and considerate of other people, and took away all unwanted materials, including the entire old solar hot water system from the roof. They left my house with the guarantee that the equipment would work perfectly, and so far the system has not missed a beat. We are getting a good supply of hot water when required and are extremely pleased to have chosen hotwater.com.au to be the supplier and installer. We received two Government rebates which was a bonus indeed. The staff at the office were easy to communicate with and ensured that the installation went smoothly. All in all, the changeover of the hot water system at my home was quite painless, thanks to the highly trained technicians who carried out their assignments with care and dedication.

Absolutely excellent service. After receiving over the top quotes from 2 other companies called hotwater.com.au. No call out fee, I was given a quote over the phone, literally thousands cheaper! Hot water unit was installed the next day. The plumber they sent was on time, very good to deal with and professional.
